Roz’s passion for dogs can be traced back to her childhood where her family home was a sanctuary for animals seeking refuge. Whether they were her own, ones that walked in off the street or strays found wandering; her home provided protection until they were reunited with their owners. Dogs were not the only ones seeking help, cats, rabbits, lizards, birds all managed to find their way to the Becker household. One of her fondest childhood memories were watching her pet dogs give birth then seeing the puppy’s eyes pop open for the first time before taking those wobbly walks.
Roz’s family includes two indulged dogs Ralf (ACD X) and Barry (Terrier X), 2 chickens Bossy and Goldie and two guinea pigs Stripey and Whitey. While Ralf and Barry are indulged, this did not stop Roz regularly training them to ensure they are obedient and can socialise with other dogs safely.
Over the years she has participated in dog programs with “Ralf” who is now 11 years old. Having taken him to puppy pre-school, obedience training, and given both Dog Agility and Herding a go (unfortunately Ralf didn’t quite have the stamina) she has had firsthand experienced with some of the programs offered via Dogs SA.
That love for animals and their welfare has continued to play an important part in Roz’s life having been a board Member for Australasian Whale and Dolphin Conservation, a member of Port River Dolphins, running Petcare Business specialised in Dog Care, to her association and sponsorships of Dog Competitions at the Royal Adelaide Show. Even in her tourism days, she loved being greeted by the dogs of small businesses she visited to conduct coaching sessions.
Roz brings years of expertise at an executive level, she headed up the Port Adelaide Visitor Information Centre, Fleurieu Peninsula Tourism, Riverland Tourism Association, and in management positions with the South Australian Tourism Commission, Australian Tourism Export Council, and the Tourism Industry Council of South Australia.
She has spent more than two decades in broad-ranging business careers that include expertise in business development, strategic planning, sponsorship, event management, marketing, communications, and brand development. Whilst providing management and team leadership in roles across the private, government and not-for-profit sectors including running a small business and managing several membership-based organisations.
Roz’s appointment brings a fresh new perspective to the organisation that will see her years of experience put to work towards growing the profile, membership, education and program participation at Dogs SA.
Outside of the office she is committed to spending time outdoors with her family (both animal and human) walking her dogs “Ralf and Barry”, swimming and fulfilling her role on the GymWest Gymnastics Club Management Committee. When time permits, she enjoys painting, volunteering at the Port Community Arts Centre Gallery and working towards completing a double major in Fine Arts and Visual Culture.
